Home of the annual Florida Folk Festival, it is a tourist destination noted for historic charm, antique shops and river recreation.

When Spanish explorers visited the region in the 1530s, it was inhabited by the former, who believed its springs possessed healing powers. The Indians considered the springs as a sacred healing ground.

Any tribe member could bathe and drink the mineral waters without fear of being attacked. The spring water flows through rocks embedded with sulfur crystals and acquires a "rotten egg" smell.

The spring called "Upper Mineral Springs" was very prominent and became Florida's first tourist attraction. The family of future governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, whose Jacksonville farm was burned by Union forces, moved to a close-by farm which they titled "Rebel's Refuge". At some point, the springs were retitled "White Sulphur Springs".

White Springs was incorporated in 1885.

During the 1930s, mineral springs fell out of favor and the town began to fade.

Today, many of the initial Victorian buildings survive, especially inside the White Springs Historic District, established in 1997 by the National Register of Historic Places. The town and state park are the site of the annual Florida Folk Festival, a four-day celebration of traditional Florida food, arts, and music.

White Springs is positioned in southeastern Hamilton County at 30 19 54 N 82 45 22 W (30.331647, -82.756008). Its southern boundary follows the Suwannee River, which forms the border with Columbia County.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 1.9 square miles (4.8 km2), of which 56,330 square feet (5,233 m2), or 0.11%, are water. The ethnic makeup of the town was 36.75% White, 62.15% African American, 0.37% Native American, and 0.73% from two or more competitions.

White Springs Library The Hamilton County School District operates the enhance schools serving White Springs, South Hamilton Elementary School in White Springs, and Hamilton County High School in an unincorporated region of the county.

South Hamilton Elementary will be merged into a new elementary school, Hamilton County Elementary School, positioned in an unincorporated region south of Jasper. Its opening is scheduled for August 2017. The Suwannee River Regional Library System operates the White Springs Public Library.
