A portion of it lies inside the town/city boundary of Sarasota, but the majority of the key is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sarasota County.

After the probable Amerindian name of Zarazote for the region and the bay, the key was originally titled "Sarasota Key" by European cartographers amid exploration beginning in 1513.

That name can be seen on maps from the early 18th century as well as on all small-town maps drawn before the name change to "Siesta Key" in the 1920s.

Siesta Key is made up of four chief districts: Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, Turtle Beach, and Siesta Key Village. Siesta Key is part of the Bradenton Sarasota Venice Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP has a total region of 3.5 square miles (9.0 km2), of which 2.4 square miles (6.1 km2) is territory and 1.1 square miles (2.9 km2), or 32.08%, is water. It contains a suburban residentiary region located on the Siesta Key barrier island on the West coast of Florida, just west of the town of Sarasota.

The improve on Siesta Key consists of single family homes, condominiums, retail shops and art arcades.
