Chipley is the governmental center of county of Washington County.

Originally called "Orange", the town/city was retitled Chipley in 1882, for the barns businessman and Florida state senator William Dudley Chipley.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has an region of 4.1 square miles (11 km2), all land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,605 citizens , 1,442 homeholds, and 908 families residing in the city.

There were 1,442 homeholds out of which 28.4% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 19.3% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 37.0% were non-families.
